Stump Grinding vs. Stump Removal: Which One Do You Need?

Once the tree’s gone, the stump’s still there — tripping the mower, sprouting suckers, and inviting carpenter ants. You’ve got two ways to deal with it, and they’re not the same job.

Stump grinding

A grinder chews the stump down to wood chips, typically 4–8 inches below grade (deeper on request). It’s the popular choice, and for good reason:

• Faster and cheaper than full removal.
• Less disruptive — no big hole, no torn-up yard.
• You can replant or re-sod over it once the grindings settle.
• The chips can be hauled off or left as free mulch.

The trade-off: the main root system stays in the ground and decays naturally over the next few years. For the vast majority of yards, that’s a non-issue.

Stump (and root) removal

Full removal excavates the stump and the major roots. It’s more invasive and more expensive, and it leaves a sizeable hole to backfill — but it’s the right call when:

• You’re building, pouring a foundation, or installing hardscape right where the stump is.
• You need to fully clear the root mass — for a new planting bed, say, or to stop a species that suckers aggressively.
• The roots are interfering with utilities or drainage.

What about the roots left behind?

After grinding, surface roots can be ground down too, and the rest simply decompose over time. If you’re replanting a new tree, we’ll grind deeper and can advise on placement so the new roots have room.
